Indie Leadership: The Future of Work No One’s Talking About (Yet)

It was late 2022. I’d just returned to work after maternity leave and found myself in a period of rediscovery—reconnecting with my business, my purpose, my message, and, frankly, trying to figure out what the heck I’m here to do.
Like many times before, I sat down to tackle the classic ‘Ideal Client Avatar’ (ICA) exercise. And once again, I hit a wall.
I’ve always struggled with this exercise. My clients come from all kinds of backgrounds—small business owners, career changers, solopreneurs, organisational leaders. Pinning down one “ideal client” felt impossible. But I knew there was something that connected them all. There were threads, clear ones — I just needed to weave them together.
As I dug deeper, one thing became crystal clear: my clients were independent leaders in every sense of the word. Some ran game changing businesses of one. Others were breaking boundaries within massive organisations. But what united them was this: they thought independently, worked independently, and created work-life structures that didn’t rely on traditional moulds. Their meaning and purpose weren’t tied to a single job title or career path—they were theirs.
That’s when the concept of the Indie Leader came into focus.
I’d come across the term Indie Thinker before—coined by Justin Murphy of the Other Life podcast — and loved its modern, rebellious spin on the tired old ‘Thought Leader’ label. But where Justin describes Indie Thinkers as ‘creators and writers building independent projects on the internet’, Indie Leadership isn’t just about intellectual creative pursuits, it’s a way of being that goes beyond what we produce. It’s a mindset, a way of working, leading, and living.
And so, I gave this group a name—a shared identity that reflects who they are and how they lead:
Indie Leaders.
The more I explored, the more I realised this wasn’t just a concept for my clients—it’s a call to action for anyone redefining leadership in their own way. Indie Leaders are changing the game, and I believe it’s time we create a world that supports their flourishing.
What is an Indie Leader?
At their core, an Indie Leader is someone who leads themselves, their work, and their life with independence, innovation, and intrinsic motivation. Their leadership isn’t tied to a specific title, organisation, or role — it transcends traditional constructs and evolves with them over time.
Indie Leaders prioritise authenticity, creativity, and purpose. They’re not here to play by the rules — they’re here to write their own.
Key Characteristics of an Indie Leader
Self-determination, agency, and autonomy:
Indie Leaders value freedom and agency (sometimes above all else). They want to make their own choices, own their successes (and failures), and set the course for their work and life. They aren’t waiting for permission.
Purpose-driven and intrinsically motivated:
The fuel for Indie Leadership comes from within. It’s not about chasing approval, titles, or external markers of success. Instead, Indie Leaders are guided by what deeply matters to them: creating meaningful work, living in alignment with their values, and making a contribution that feels impactful.
Innovative and creative boundary-pushers:
Indie Leaders see opportunities where others see limits. They challenge the status quo — finding creative new ways to solve problems, lead change, and inspire others. Whether it’s shaking up outdated processes or dreaming up new ways of working, they thrive at the edges of convention.
Inclusive and diversity-focused:
Indie Leaders actively seek out and celebrate different perspectives. They understand that real innovation and impact come from embracing diverse ideas, backgrounds, and lived experiences.
Non-conformist, non-traditional, non-mainstream:
These leaders reject the cookie-cutter approach. They embrace paths less traveled, working in ways that feel authentic — even if it looks completely different from the norm. Many actively resist the pressures of traditional capitalist systems that equate worth with productivity or profit, instead valuing work that prioritises people, purpose, and sustainable impact.
Indie Leadership Isn’t a Solo Journey
Here’s the thing about being an Indie Leader: while independence is at the heart of this way of leading, it doesn’t mean working in isolation.
In fact, it’s even more critical for Indie Leaders to come together in community. Indie Leaders face unique challenges — juggling autonomy with overwhelm, fighting isolation, and navigating paths that others might not fully understand.
Community offers a space to connect, share ideas, and find solidarity with others who are walking a similar journey. It’s where Indie Leaders can lean on each other for support, inspiration, and collaboration. Together, they can amplify their impact, learn from one another, and create momentum that’s simply not possible alone.
Why Indie Leadership Is on the Rise
The rise of Indie Leadership isn’t a coincidence — it’s a response to the way our world of work and life is evolving. Here’s what’s driving the shift:
Purpose matters more than ever.
People are no longer content with working just to pay the bills. They want careers that feel meaningful, where their values aren’t just personal but actively reflected in their work. Many see the lip service paid to purpose and meaning by organisations, so they have to find ways to create alignment for themselves.
Work-life design is evolving.
Forget outdated notions of ‘balance.’ People are designing lives where work fits seamlessly into their values, energy, unique circumstances and priorities — not the other way around.
Portfolio careers are becoming more mainstream.
Climbing the traditional career ladder doesn’t hold the same appeal as it once did. More people are freelancing, consulting, and blending income streams, which gives them the flexibility to follow their passions and lead in unconventional ways.
COVID-19 changed everything.
The pandemic forced us all to rethink work, accelerating shifts toward remote setups, flexible schedules, and a greater emphasis on well-being.
The internet and personal branding are empowering individuals.
Technology has levelled the playing field, allowing individuals to share their expertise, monetise their skills, and lead authentically — all without needing the backing of traditional structures.
Neurodiversity & neurodivergence is being embraced.
As workplaces evolve, there’s growing recognition of the unique strengths and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring. Indie Leadership allows those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other neurodivergent experiences to craft work environments and systems that align with their natural rhythms and strengths, unlocking innovation and creativity in new ways.
Innovation is the new currency.
Startups and creative problem-solvers are shaping the future of industries. Indie Leaders, with their boundary-pushing mindsets, are perfectly positioned to lead in this culture of innovation.

This shift is critical in fostering more equitable, human-centered systems where people, not profit or hierarchy, are at the heart of decision-making.
It fosters inclusion.

The Challenges of Indie Leadership
While Indie Leadership offers freedom and fulfillment, it’s not without its hurdles. Here are some of the unique challenges:
Isolation:
Independence can sometimes mean working solo, which can feel lonely without a network of like-minded peers. Indie Leaders need spaces where they can connect, share ideas, and find support.
Overwhelm:
When you’re responsible for every decision, every task, and every outcome, it’s easy to feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world. Learning to prioritize and delegate becomes crucial.
Focus:
When you’re brain is creative, innovative and you’re leading a new way, too many ideas, plans and projects can make it difficult to channel energy, know where to begin and keep up momentum to create to the finish line.
Misunderstanding:
Non-traditional paths don’t always fit neatly into societal expectations, leaving Indie Leaders to explain, justify, or prove the validity of their choices to others.
Sustainability:
Leading independently requires managing energy, resources, and boundaries to avoid burnout. It’s a delicate balance that demands constant attention and care.
For Organisations Supporting Indie Leaders
For organisations, integrating and supporting Indie Leaders can also be challenging—but the rewards are worth it. It requires:
Flexibility:
Create environments where non-linear paths, unconventional ideas, and diverse leadership styles are celebrated, not stifled.
Trust:
Empower Indie Leaders to create, innovate and lead in their own way while maintaining alignment with broader organisational goals. Give them space to build things from the ground up, encouraging the intrepreneurial spirit.
Support:
Provide resources, tools, and structures that cater to different leadership styles. Whether it’s offering coaching, creating open collaboration spaces, or encouraging professional growth, support is key to helping Indie Leaders thrive.
